Tennessee Onions
A rich Southern side dish made with sweet onions, butter, and plenty of melted cheese. It’s delicious alongside grilled steak, barbecue, pork chops, or roasted chicken.
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 35–40 minutes
Servings: 6
Ingredients
- 3–4 large sweet onions (such as Vidalia), sliced into ¼-inch rings
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Separate the onion slices into rings and spread them evenly in the baking dish.
- Sprinkle with garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper.
- Dot the onions with the butter.
- Sprinkle the cheddar, mozzarella, and Parmesan evenly over the onions.
- Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes, until the onions are tender and the cheese is melted, bubbly, and lightly golden.
- Let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
Tips
- Sweet onions produce the best flavor, but yellow onions work well too.
- For a crispier, more golden top, broil for 2–3 minutes at the end of baking.
- Add cooked, crumbled bacon or a pinch of red pepper flakes for extra flavor.
Storage
- Refrigerate: Store in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
- Reheat: Warm in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 10–15 minutes or microwave until heated through.
