Easy Homemade White Bread

Ingredients
- 3½–4 cups (440–500 g) bread flour or all-purpose flour
- 2¼ teaspoons (1 packet/7 g) active dry yeast
- 1 cup (240 ml) warm milk (110°F/43°C)
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg (optional, for a richer loaf)
For Brushing
- 1 tablespoon melted butter
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let stand for 5–10 minutes, until foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 3½ cups flour and the salt.
- Add the yeast mixture, softened butter, and egg (if using). Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
- Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes, adding more flour if needed, until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1–1½ hours, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough, shape it into a loaf, and place it in a greased 9×5-inch (23×13 cm) loaf pan.
- Cover and let rise again for 30–45 minutes, until the dough rises about 1 inch above the rim of the pan.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake for 30–35 minutes, until the loaf is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
- Brush the hot loaf with melted butter and cool on a wire rack before slicing.
