French Onion Stuffed Chicken is a juicy, flavor-packed dish filled with caramelized onions and melted cheese, then baked until perfectly tender. This recipe serves 4.
Ingredients
For the Chicken
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp dried thyme
For the Filling
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves (or ½ tsp dried thyme)
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (or Swiss cheese)
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
For the Sauce
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tbsp all-purpose flour (optional, for a thicker sauce)
Garnish
- 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Heat the butter in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions and cook for 25–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deeply golden and caramelized.
- Stir in the garlic, thyme, and Worcestershire sauce. Cook for 1 minute, then remove from the heat and let cool slightly.
- Mix the Gruyère and Parmesan cheeses into the onion mixture.
- Using a sharp knife, cut a pocket into the side of each chicken breast, being careful not to cut all the way through.
- Season the chicken with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and dried thyme.
- Stuff each chicken breast with the onion and cheese mixture. Secure with toothpicks if needed.
- Heat the olive oil in an oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the chicken for 3–4 minutes per side until lightly browned.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, and flour (if using). Pour the mixture around the chicken.
- Transfer the skillet to the oven and bake for 18–22 minutes, or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
- Spoon some of the pan sauce over the chicken, garnish with fresh parsley, and serve.
Serving Suggestions
Serve with:
- Mashed potatoes
- Roasted vegetables
- Buttered green beans
- Rice or egg noodles
- Crusty bread to soak up the sauce
Tips
- For the richest flavor, take your time caramelizing the onions—don’t rush this step.
- Gruyère provides the classic French onion flavor, but Swiss or mozzarella also work well.
- Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before slicing to keep it juicy.
