Goulash (American-Style Comfort Classic)
Hearty, saucy, and loaded with beef and pasta — this is the cozy one-pot meal many grew up with.
Ingredients (Serves 6)
-
1 lb ground beef
-
1 small onion, diced
-
3 cloves garlic, minced
-
2 cups elbow macaroni (uncooked)
-
1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
-
1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes
-
1½ cups beef broth
-
1 tsp Italian seasoning
-
1 tsp paprika
-
½ tsp salt (adjust to taste)
-
½ tsp black pepper
-
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
Instructions (One-Pot Method)
1️⃣ Brown the beef
Cook ground beef and onion in a large pot over medium heat until beef is browned. Drain excess grease.
Add garlic and cook 30 seconds.
2️⃣ Add liquids & seasoning
Stir in tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, beef broth, Italian seasoning, paprika, salt, and pepper.
3️⃣ Add pasta
Stir in uncooked macaroni. Bring to a gentle boil.
4️⃣ Simmer
Reduce heat, cover, and simmer 12–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until pasta is tender.
5️⃣ Finish
Stir in cheese (if using) until melted. Let sit 5 minutes to thicken.
Tips for Perfect Goulash
-
Stir occasionally so pasta doesn’t stick.
-
Add extra broth if it gets too thick.
-
For richer flavor, add a splash of Worcestershire sauce.
-
A pinch of sugar balances tomato acidity.
Flavor Variations
-
Spicy – Add red pepper flakes or diced jalapeños.
-
Loaded Veggie – Add bell peppers or mushrooms.
-
Creamy – Stir in ¼ cup sour cream at the end.
