Soft Homemade White Bread
This classic homemade white bread has a soft, fluffy crumb and a golden crust. It’s perfect for sandwiches, toast, or serving warm with butter.
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Rise Time: 1½–2 hours
Bake Time: 30–35 minutes
Total Time: About 2½ hours
Yield: 1 large loaf (12 slices)
Ingredients
- 3½ cups (440 g) bread flour (or all-purpose flour)
- 2¼ teaspoons (7 g) instant or active dry yeast
- 1¼ cups (300 ml) warm water (105–110°F / 40–43°C)
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened (or vegetable oil)
- 1½ teaspoons salt
- 1 tablespoon melted butter, for brushing (optional)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let stand for 5–10 minutes until foamy (skip this step if using instant yeast and mix it directly with the flour).
- Add the softened butter, salt, and 2 cups of the flour. Mix until combined.
- Gradually add the remaining flour until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf.
- Place it into a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan. Cover and let rise for 30–45 minutes, until the dough rises about 1 inch above the rim.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until the loaf is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped. The internal temperature should reach 190–200°F (88–93°C).
- Remove from the pan and cool on a wire rack. Brush with melted butter for a softer crust, if desired.
Storage
- Room Temperature: Store in an airtight bag or bread box for up to 4 days.
- Freezer: Wrap tightly and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature before serving.
Tips
- Bread flour produces a chewier loaf, while all-purpose flour makes a softer texture.
- Measure flour accurately by spooning it into the measuring cup and leveling it off.
- If the top browns too quickly, loosely cover the loaf with aluminum foil during the last 10 minutes of baking.
- For extra softness, replace ¼ cup (60 ml) of the water with warm milk.
Enjoy fresh with butter, jam, honey, or use it for sandwiches, French toast, or grilled cheese.
