For the Sandwiches
- 4 slices sourdough, Texas toast, or your favorite sandwich bread
- 4 slices deli ham (or about 6 oz/170 g sliced ham)
- 4 slices cheddar, Swiss, or provolone cheese
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise or softened butter (for spreading)
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)
Instructions
- Caramelize the onions: Heat the butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 12–15 minutes until soft, golden, and caramelized. Let cool slightly.
- Assemble the sandwiches: Spread mayonnaise or butter on one side of each slice of bread. If using Dijon mustard, spread it on the inside of two slices.
- Layer each sandwich with:
- 1 slice of cheese
- Ham
- Caramelized onions
- Another slice of cheese
- Top with the remaining bread, buttered side facing out.
- Air fry: Preheat the air fryer to 370°F (188°C) for 3 minutes.
- Place the sandwiches in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Cook for 4–5 minutes, then carefully flip and cook another 3–5 minutes, or until the bread is crisp and golden and the cheese is fully melted.

Storage & Reheating
- Refrigerator: Wrap leftovers and refrigerate for up to 2 days.

Tips
- Use freshly grated cheese for the best melt and flavor.
- Don’t overfill the sandwich, or the cheese may leak out while cooking.
- If your air fryer runs hot, check the sandwich after 3 minutes on each side to prevent over-browning.
