Ingredients
For the Onions
- 4 small sweet onions
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
- Olive oil cooking spray
Blooming Sauce
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 teaspoon prepared horseradish
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
- ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
Instructions
1. Prepare the Onions
- Peel each onion, leaving the root end intact.
- Place the onion root-side down.
- Slice downward into 12–16 wedges, stopping about ½ inch (1 cm) from the root so the onion stays together.
- Gently spread the petals apart with your fingers.
2. Prepare the Coating
In one shallow bowl, combine:
- Flour
- Paprika
- Garlic powder
- Onion powder
- Italian seasoning
- Cayenne (if using)
- Salt and pepper
In a second bowl, whisk together:
- Eggs
- Milk
Place the panko breadcrumbs in a third bowl.
3. Bread the Onions
- Coat each onion thoroughly in the seasoned flour, working between the petals.
- Dip into the egg mixture, ensuring it reaches all layers.
- Coat generously with panko breadcrumbs, gently pressing them onto the onion.
4. Air Fry
- Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 3 minutes.
- Lightly spray the onions with olive oil.
- Place the onions in the air fryer basket with space between them.
- Air fry for 15–18 minutes, spraying lightly halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
5. Make the Sauce
Mix all dipping sauce ingredients in a small bowl until smooth. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
Tips
- Sweet onions (such as Vidalia) work best because they’re mild and become tender when cooked.
- Chilling the breaded onions for 10 minutes before air frying helps the coating stick.
- Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket—cook in batches if necessary.
- Spray generously with oil for the crispiest finish.
Variations
- Cheesy: Sprinkle grated Parmesan over the onions during the last 2 minutes of cooking.
- Spicy: Add extra cayenne or chili powder to the coating.
- Herb: Mix dried parsley and oregano into the breadcrumb coating.
- Gluten-Free: Use gluten-free flour and gluten-free panko.
Serving Suggestions
Pair with:
- Ranch dressing
- Chipotle aioli
- Honey mustard
- Barbecue sauce
- Burgers, steaks, grilled chicken, or sandwiches
Storage
Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
Reheating
Reheat in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 3–5 minutes, until hot and crispy. Avoid microwaving, as it will soften the coating.
